I hesitate to add this bit but...

My grandmother had a beautiful photo of a sleeping infant, circa 1900ish. Turns out, it was her 6-week old brother who died of scarlett fever. Apparently it was common for families who lost children to have them photographed before burial as a sort of remembrance for the family.

So, if any of the children appear to be sleeping, you might want to check for a death certificate.
