Group,
At: http://www.stevemorse.org/nyc/nyc.php we have been starting a project to find people on the New York State Census for 1905, 1915, and 1925, and for the Boroughs of New York City.
As many of you know, there is no name index to these records which are available from the Family History Library (among other places). To find families one must know their address and what AD/ED (Assembly District/Election District) they were in; that's how the FHL films are searched.
There are two ways of finding the AD/EDs. The FHL has rolls and rolls of index cards that show for every specific address in the City what AD/ED they were in. A second way would be to find AD/ED maps of the 3 censuses, and record all streets within all of the districts for use with a geographical search tool. We are going to do both approaches on the One Step site.
The FHL has a nice set of map microfiches for the 1925 Census for New York City, and I've scanned those in under high resolution, and am working from those. I'm in the process of producing a file for Queens 1925.
This is to announce the completion of a finder aide for 1925 Manhattan taken from the LDS fiche. There are some problems with the shape of the 1925 EDs....see FAQ 13 and if you want to see what I'm referring to...see http://members.cox.net/censusfiles/part32.jpg
which shows part of the 1925 map from an area southwest of Central Park.
Now for the request for resources. We have a team of volunteers working on the address card approach to the city census, and eventually hope to have both databases/methods up on the One Step site. We have no working utilities right now for 1905 Bronx/Manhattan, and Brooklyn, or for 1915 Bronx and Staten Island. The other 1905/1915 Boroughs either are done or the census itself is missing. I have mapping resources in hand for 1925 and if I had such resources for 1905 and 1915 could complete that part of the utility myself.
I know from some preliminary searching by Tony Sasso that either at the Municipal Archives or Reference Library on Chambers Street that there is some sort of file of "cards" with films on them that show AD/ED maps of the City. I NEED SOMEONE TO FIGURE OUT HOW TO SCAN THOSE FOR ME...FOR THE YEARS AND BOROUGHS NEEDED....in high enough resolution that I can see where the boundaries of the EDs are... I can supply the base map for individual streets. Short of that, a text description of each of the EDs (NOT the ADs but I probably would need that as well) would work. The Voter Registration people might also have the resources I would need.
Since I'm 3,000 miles away, it's a little difficult for me to do this work.
