The last city directory of Manhattan was published in 1933. Telephone directories put them out of business I suppose.
There are a few elite directories for New York City, for example, Café Society Register. 1941-__. New York: C.S.R. Publishing Company, 19__-__. __ volumes. Annual. Editor, 1941-__: James McKinley Bryant. (New York {City}--Directories) (LC 41-24877). I don?t know if a lodger would be listed therein.
If the person was a registered voter in New York City, his name and address would be listed in official publications. I'm not sure that his companion (if any) at time of registration could be determined from the lists. The New York Public Library catalogs one collection of such publications as :
NEW YORK (City). City Record Office. City Record Supplement. Registry of Voters. New York: The City Record, 1881-19__. __ vols. (various pagings). Annual, in October or November, as supplement to The City Record. Caption title: List of Registered Voters. Arranged by borough, thereunder by assembly district, election district, street name, and house number. Its use as an address directory is quite inconvenient because the reader must know the current assembly and election district for the residence of the voter. (New York {City}. Board of Elections. List of registered voters). Cf. NEW YORK (City). Elections Board. List of Enrolled Voters.
