I'm looking for some general help on locating the death record of the above - my grandfather who died in Manhattan around this date ( not exactly sure though) and was buried in Potter's Field in Hart Island. He came from Ballinrobe, Co.Mayo in the 1920s having been in the RIC in Mayo and British Army.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to first find his death record, which I need in order to find him in Potter's Field? I don't seem to be able to bring him up on any free searches. Would there be any reason a death in NYC would not be registered in that time frame even if he was indigent (I understand he was a "resident" of the infamous Bowery at the time). Should I be able to find the record if I join one of the genealogy groups and pay to search? Or can I go somehwere in Manhattan and pore through records myself - where? Any help on the best way to go about this will be appreciated. Richard.
