I think the reason you can't find John Joyce in the online indexes is because they don't go up to 1947 yet, with the exception of the SSDI. (Someone please correct me here if I am wrong.) And if grandpa truly was indigent, its unlikely that he would have had a social security number at that time since it was not the widespread program that it is now. That being said, the NY Public Library and the NYC Municipal Archives have the death indexes for the time period you are looking for. You can also order the indexes from the FHL library for a nominal fee.
