i have two pieces of information that may be helpful.
First, I just checked my copy of "The Other Islands of New York City" by
Sharon Seitz and Stuart Miller, The Countryman Press, 1996. It is a
fascinating look at parts of NYC History most people never hear about, and
very very useful for finding out a little about institutions that used to
be on the islands. This book states that the burials on Hart Island began
April 20, 1869. The first person buried there was a woman who had died in
Charity Hospital. It mentions this island as the City's official potter's
field, and there is no mention of their having been one on Roosevelt
Island. I would guess that anyone who died in the Charity Hospital who
could not pay for their own burial, and who had no one who could pay for
it, was buried on Hart Island. (I have no affiliation with the authors or
publishers - I just really enjoy the book)

I also know, however, that in the late 1950's, in the case of a Roman
Catholic Maternity Hospital in Brooklyn, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul
would arrange for the burial of stillborn children. How early they were
doing this, whether they did this only at Catholic Hospitals, whether they
ever buried adults, or what kind of records may have been kept I do not
know, although I would like to.

Hope this helps someone.
Theresa

> Don't know if this will help. I've been trying for years to locate an
aunt who was born at Matrnity Hosp. in Blackwell Island in July 1885 and
died there (or then known as Charity Hosp. Blackwell Island. Since I've
searched all the parishes in the area for burial info. have been advised by
someone with a relative born in the same hosp. that these infants may have
been buried in "Potters Field" on Roosevelt Island or Hart Island. I
believe they are both the same place. Perhaps you can find out something
from this point. If you do - I'd appreciate any info, so that I might go
further myself with my own quest. Good luck, and I'll look forward to the
results of your search. Would be encouraging at least to know if someone
was found!
