Try a google search such as Piano manufacturers in 1880's or something similar.
It was not difficult for someone living in NYC in those days to get over to Queens. There were several ferries.
You may want to look at the website for Steinway to see if it mentions other manufacturers or ask someone to do a look up in a New York City directory for that year.
