On 10/8/05 (8:41:29 PM MDT), in a posting to , Leslie

"Due to the statement made in a prior email, the birth listed below would had
taken place on Manhatten Island, New York, New York??

15 Aug 1874 Manhattan, New York, New York

and if the birth had taken place on Manhatten Island the why would the index
from FHL have it listed as Manhattan instead of Manhatten Island???"

I'm guessing that the term "Manhattan" was used as shorthand for "Manhattan
Island" on the index from FHL

Actually, in 1874, the City and County of New York had just annexed the
"western" Bronx (all or parts of the Towns of Kingsbridge, Morrisania and West
Farms; or, in other words, the area west of the Bronx River and south of the City
of Yonkers) from Westchester County, and hence. at that time, included more
than Manhattan (not forgetting about the several small islands in the East River
that were part of New York County from its inception on November 1, 1683).

I hope this information is useful or, at least, interesting.

* L'Shannah Tovah (li-SHAH-nuh TOH-vuh; li-shah-NAH toh-VAH)
Hebrew. Lit. for a good year. The common greeting during Rosh ha Shannah and
the Days of Awe. This is a shortening of "L'Shannah tovah tikatev v'taihatem"
(or, to women, "L'Shannah tovah tikatevi v'taihatemi"), which means, "May you
be inscribed and sealed for a good year." This year, Rosh ha Shannah begins
at sunset on Monday, October 3 on the civil calendar.
