Hi,
It took me awhile to track down the original records a few years ago and when I found them, I could see why they were never microfilmed. They are in very sad shape - many of the pages have a huge whole in the center of the page and the other pages might be in one piece but are many are nearly unreadable. Needless to say, I didn't find my family (GRAF) although I knew from city directories that they were living in that ward.
I believe that the original book is located at the NY County Clerk Division of Old Records at 30 Chambers St. (7th floor) - although it has been several years since I located it. So I would call and double check if the book is still there. Good Luck!

<<While trying to locate my Marshall and Walker ancestors in New York, I've
run up against a real brick wall in the 1855 census--the 17th ward has not
been filmed by the LDS Genealogical Library. Does anyone know whether the
record has been microfilmed at all or where I can find the originals. The
family lived in either election district 5 or 6. I checked with the New
York State Genealogical Society--it does not research census records. Is
there someone who does? By the way, I just checked the LDS microfilm for
Ward 11. It is terribly water-damaged. Election districts 1 through 4 are
largely unreadable, 5 through 9 are pretty clear with nice handwriting and
10 is readable but the handwriting is attrocious.>>
