Hello,
I can see the family of Hattie and Dora Oldfield in NYC through the census. I have often wondered if this family could be related to mine. Especially since Henry Oldfield (head of household) and William Oldfield (Sr. ) (my relative - head of household) are both showing as being from Ireland. The ages are very close....both born around 1833-1836. They both first appear in the 1860 census. I wonder - if this could be a crack in my brick wall? I have never found anything that connected these two families and I may not however, it's an interesting possibility.
This is the 1870, Kings, NY census:
Oldfield, Henry 38 Ireland
Adelaid 37 Ireland
Eliza 16 NY
Dora 19
Hattie 10
Lilly 6
As for Jennie, I have a Jennie Oldfield in my family and then there's another Jennie Oldfield (it appears)that may also be related to me. I don't believe they are the same person. I think your discovery of Jennie Oldfield even being associated with the Henry Oldfield family is a probable clue! :)
This is where I find my Jennie Oldfield:
1880 Brooklyn, Kings, NY
Deusmer, John 43 Head Ireland
Deusmer, Ruth 30 Sister Ireland
Oldfield, Jeannie Niece 20
This Jeannie above, is living with her Aunt Ruth Densmore and Uncle John Densmore. These two individuals are absolutely postively relatives of mine thru various source documents. They were a brother and sister to my gr gr grandmother Anna (Densmore) Oldfield - she was William's FIRST wife and she died in childbirth in March 1869. He had, as a minimum, two children with Anna: The first Anne born 1856 in Hoboken, NJ and then my gr grandfather William born in 1857 Hoboken, NJ and then the family moved to NYC in 1860. The problem is, I'm sure that they had other children from 1860 to 1869 but I have no idea who they were. It's possible that Jeannie was one of them and may not have shown in the 1860 census because she was not born as of June, when the census was taken. It's possible.
Next, the "other" Jeannie - I do not believe is the same Jeannie as above is found in the 1900 census Brooklyn, Kings, NY:
Jeanette Oldfield Born abt 1871 "Canada English"
It just didn't feel like this was the same 'Jeannie' as niece in the 1880 census. Other than the age being off by about 11 years, the "canada English" does not fit in, either. I researched this last year and discovered the following:
I sent away to NJ and received the following death certificate:
Jeannette B. Oldfield. Date of death: 14 March 1941.
Birth date: 8 Aug 1856. Birthplace: Three Rivers, Canada. Father: William Oldfield (England). Informant: Mr. Charles P. Shine Jr., New York City.
If this had been my "Jeannie", she would have shown in the 1860 Hoboken census along with William's other two children. And then, I thought, what if she was from another mother - but I have no evidence that William was ever in Canada. And...she would have been born at about the exact year as one of William's other children. I don't believe this is my William's child.
But, she likely was a relative because she is buried in the same Green-wood plot in Brooklyn as my Gr gr grandmother Anna (Densmore) Oldfield - again, William's first wife. Green-wood was gracious enough to confirm that this Jeannette B. Oldfield was born in Three Rivers, Canada. She was a late resident of Bloomfield, NJ. This Jeannette B. Oldfield
was never married.
I wonder who your Jeannie is? I was hoping she could be the niece shown in the 1880 census with the Densmore family, however, if she was married in Apr 1880 - this would not be the case. She also appears unlikely to be the Jeannette B. Oldfield - who, it appears, never married. Either way, I am related to both of these Jeannie's above - however, I have no link to the Henry Oldfield family. If there is a relation to your Jeannie - it, at the very least, proves some type of relationship to the Henry Oldfield family! We need to get a copy of a death certificate to see who her parents were. Do you know where she died?
A quick census look showed me they were living in Brooklyn in 1910 with Abraham and Fay and that Jeannie was about 54. This would make her born about 1856. Who knows?! In the 1900 census, there is a Jennie Burrows as head of household born 1854 with two sons in Brooklyn. I also find the family of Abraham, Jeannie & Fay in 1900 Brooklyn. We'll have to make sure not to confuse the two? Jeannie Oldfield is not showing in the 1860 census. I do not see her in the 1870 census either. I wonder if her DOB is wrong on the later census? In my Oldfield family, there are not any of William's children from the first marriage showing - other than William Oldfield jr. (in a Long Island orphanage) who was apparently placed in the orphanage when his mother died. I think the children were dispersed from the time of Anna Densmore's death in 1869. And, then William remarried within a year thereafter and began his second family.
So much to look at! But, I definitely think another "door" has opened and considering there is a probably relation to the Jeannie Oldfields. I hope this information is proving helpful to you, too. I'd be glad to work on this with you. Please let me know if you discover where Jeannie (Oldfield) Burrows may have been buried or anything else you can piece together! I think her death certificate will tell us a lot. I'll wait to see what you have/think. Thank you!
