Hello Katie,

His parents names too would help because he's probably listed with them for the 1850/60 census records since he was born in 1846.

His civil and church death certs might show specifically where he was born in NY and his parents names. His obituary, tombstone, cemetery record and will may also help.

His children's civil and church birth, baptism, marriage and death records may include their father's specific place of birth in NY.

If his parents were born in Ireland, the surname may appear unrecognisable in both the 1850 and 1860 US census records because of the interpretation of the Irish accent as well as the unfamiliarity of the census enumerators with the Irish surnames of which Lanagan is one.

Some of the versions I've seen in the 1850/60 US census records include Lenegan, Lennegen, Lanigan, Linnegan, Lingan, Lengan, etc. The soundex may help.
