Message Board Post:

John Csernus, Age 39, living in West Virginia in 1920; sons Steve age 3 1/2 and John, 10, wife Elizabeth, age 35. Boarders Antol Banyasz and Loriss Delaczez also live in the home.

The family lived in Monongalia County, West Virginia in the Maidsville District. John Sr, is a miner in a coal mine and was from Ugess or Ugecsa (sp?) Hungaria, his parents were from Magyar, Hungaria. Elizabeth also the same. His children have no occupation, but the boarders in his home are also coal miners.

John Jr was born in Canada and Steve was born in Pennsylvania. John Jr and John Senior came to the US in 1917, Elizabeth in 1918. Other than Steve, who was born here, none are citizens or have applications pending to apply for citizenship at this time. The rule at that time was you must have lived here a minimum of five years, be age 16 or over, be employed or unlikely to become a public charge, have a fixed address and one witness to these things. They hadn't lived here that long at this point.

And since John Jr was born in Canada, then the family, or at least Elizabteth, at one time must have resided in Canada. You can check these free sites to get started finding Canada records:

www.lac-bac.ca
www.familysearch.org

I can't check for PA federal census records as they were recorded only every ten years; in 1900, 1910 then again in 1920, etc. The family wasn't here in 1910, so there would be no record of them in that year.

Record for Paul is skimpy:

Paul Csernus or Csernuc, age 50, widower, from Magyar Hungary; he was a varnisher in a furniture company, living in Cuyahoga County, Ohio, in the city of Cleveland in 1920. Many other boarders lived in this home, run by a widow named Elizabeth Kosuk. He came to the US in 1907 and as of 1920 was not a citizen nor a provisional applicant.
