Would you believe we had three grocery stores within two blocks of our house.
Mr. Mascot had the best penny candy. He lived above the store and when the
bell ran he had to come all the way downstairs while we spent a very long time
deciding what candy to choose. All this for a penny or two sale. He never
hurried us. Later we might see him with his little wagon delivering groceries to
some patron down the street. I suppose Mrs. Mascot was minding the store then.
A block beyond that store was Hooks also on on Stevenson Ave. He keep a tab
and when my Mom needed groceries I would take the list and carry them home. One
time my friend Pat who lived on 58th Street and I on 57th, both needed to
go to the store so we met in the alley and went there together. After filing
the orders Mr. Hook ordered me to leave. Of course I was most upset so I waited
outside for my friend. When she came out he had given her a sucker. Well, she
had money to pay the month's bill and was favored with a treat. I never felt
good about Mr. Hook after that.
There was also another grocery store on 56 th Street but we didn't go there
often.
Judy, could your butcher shop have been Huers. They were two brothers from
Bergholz. My Mom went there frequently.
Thanks for the memories Vee.
