Dear Folks,
Today was take-out-the-trash day for tomorrow morning's pickup at the curb.
About a month ago I realized that it was getting too dangerous for me to
carry the recycle bin out to the curb because I need both hands to carry it
and therefore, couldn't take my cane along to help me keep my balance. I
finally screwed up my courage and called my "next door" neighbor Dawn and
asked her if she would do it for me. She was more than pleased to help me
and so was her 9-year-old son Jamie willing to help. Ever since then they
both seem to enjoy the "experience."
Well, this evening they didn't show up and around 8:00 I left a message on
my answer machine. No return call by 9:00. I almost got panicky until I
realized the sky wouldn't fall if my one box of recycle stuff didn't make it
to the curb this week. There's always next week's pickup.
Nonetheless I still considered taking it out myself. Nope, still too
dangerous. Then a light bulb lit up over my head. All that I would need to
do is to tie a sturdy piece of string or rope to the handle of the box, set
the empty box outside me door with no problem and then load it up with the
recycle stuff, still no problem. I could then just drag it down the
driveway while still using my cane with my other hand to help me keep my
balance. I was a bit excited over that notion in that I wouldn't have to
depend on anyone to do it for me.
However, comma, there was one itsy bitsy problem with that remarkable idea.
There aren't any holes in either handle of the plastic recycle bin.
Therefore, no way to tie any sort of pull rope to it. Dadratit! It was
such a good idea!
Wait, hold the phone! It's now 9:20 and not only did Dawn just show up with
her son Jamie, but also her 16-year-old daughter Heather! Their delay was
due to Jamie's last Little League Baseball game of the season this evening
(his team lost AGAIN!). Heather took out the recycle bin, Jamie did his
familiar job of bringing in the single heavy bag of nonperishable groceries
from the trunk of my car while Dawn and I talked. However, Dawn told me
that they had leave right away to get to the grocery store for some needed
things. She added, however, that they would be right back inasmuch as she
knew I had something I wanted to show them. A very large collection of
match BOX labels that my father had received from all over the world back in
the 1930s.
So there you have it, Boys and Girls. Another day in the exciting life of
Auntie Vee! :-)
