Why did people in Troy change their names. My grandfather did the very same thing. Grampa changed the name from Ancona to Cody.

Seeking information on my Great Uncle. His name is CHRISTOPHER YOUNG. He and
brother came over from Montreal to visit an elder brother in Oswego, New
York. The family name was DION and his Oswego brother took up the name of
YOUNG. Therefore CHRISTOPHER took up the name YOUNG. and moved to TROY, NY.
His brother did not change the family name and went on to Webster Mass. This
took place during the late 1800st. Any information would be appreciated.
