Hello Janet and fellow SI listers,

My Staten Island connection begins with my ggrandparents, Heinrich
HERCHENRODER b. 1838 Hesse Darmstadt, arrived NY October 2, 1865. My future
ggrandmother, Margaretha MUTH b. 1840 Hesse Darmstadt likewise was a
passenger on the same ship. I do not know how or why they located to Staten
Island. The first concrete evidence I have is my grandfather's baptismal
certificate from St. John's Ev. Lutheran Church on Manor Road. It shows him,
Wilhelm Johan Herchenroder, being born on July 20, 1879 in Elm Park, and
baptized on August 17, 1879. It lists John KAUFMANN, Mina MUTH and Anna
BAETZ as witnesses. I believe these people are all related to my
ggrandparents.

St. John's Church has provided me with burial information for my
ggrandparents in their cemetery, but unfortunately their records prior to
1889 are missing.

I am trying to find out just how many siblings my grandfather had...the
burial records for his father say he died leaving 8 children and 12
grandchildren, but I can only locate 2 sisters.

There is a possibility they lived on Winant Street, which I believe is in
Port Richmond. Is Elm Park in that same area? There is also a possibility
my ggrandfather and his one of his daughters worked for a fireworks company.
I have not been able to verify that.

Well that's certainly more than I intended to write, but maybe it will mean
something to someone on the list. I really enjoy being a part of this
community.
