Subject: [NYSTEUBE-L] Broughton - Erskine

Years ago when I first started researching my line of this family, I found
that John Urial Broughton who was married to Naomi Rowley had a number of
children. Elizabeth is my ancestor and that is the one that I focused on.
Elizabeth was the daughter of John Urial Broughton and Naomi Rowley. I knew
that she (Elizabeth) was born about 1835. Elizabeth married my grandfather
Joseph Erskine. But FIRST, Joseph Erskine was married to Elizabeth's
half-sister. Her name was Jane and she was the daughter of John Urial
Broughton and an unknown woman.
I know from census records that Jane was born about 1830 because she was 20
years old and married to Joseph for the 1850 census of Steuben County, New
York. Now that was all okay as long as I only knew that there were the two
girls. Now that we have much more information on the family of John Urial
Broughton and Naomi Rowley
we have information of the following children:
Nancy Anne BROUGHTON (1827-1864)
Urial Edward BROUGHTON Jr. (abt 1831-25 Nov 1913)
John BROUGHTON (abt 1833-1862)
Elizabeth BROUGHTON (14 Jun 1835-25 Aug 1883)
Martha Ann BROUGHTON (1838-1908)
Hannah"Ann" Maria BROUGHTON (1841-1885)
Charles W. BROUGHTON (1844-9 Oct 1914)
William BROUGHTON (1 Jan 1847-)
Susannah BROUGHTON (abt 1842-)
As you can see, if John and Naomi had Nancy Anne in 1827 and then Urial
Edward about 1831, how was he married to another woman who had Jane in 1830?
And, the book Col. Bill's Tales has a section that states that John returned
to the area and married "the widow York" by 1832..... How do we know that
Nancy Anne and Urial Edward belong to Naomi? Do we have any source
information
that would help me out? Do we have anything that definately lists the names
of the kids and who belongs to whom? I understand that SOMEWHERE in the
Canisteo area of Steuben County is a bible that belonged to the Broughton
family. Anything that you can offer would be
of great help to me. Thanks for your time.
