The first birth (1800) actually predates the origins of St. Lawrence county.
The county was formed in 1802 from parts of Clinton, Herkimer and Montgomery
counties (according to The Handybook for Genealogists). You may find some
useful hints at the county site under usgenweb. Click on 'places', then
'Lisbon'. There is mention on the Lisbon page of an early settler (Oneill)
from 1798 so apparently the settlement existed under one of the three counties
listed above. Also, from the Lisbon page (or any 'places' page) you can click
on 'roster of officials' then 'town officials' which will lead you to Terry
Fischer, P.O. Box 216, Lisbon, NY 13568, town historian for Lisbon. He may be
able to point you to some likely sources of info. Also, at the county site, be
sure to check cemetery and census records by Anne Cady. Many other valuable
resources by many other volunteers also available.
Start at www.usgenweb.org, click on 'the project's state pages' then 'map of
U.S.' then NY state. Next, click on 'county selection page' then use the drop
down list of names to select St. Lawrence county. Herkimer, Clinton, and
Montgomery counties would have similar sites. All are volunteer run and some
are more active than others.
The odds of finding good info that early in county history are small. Old
newspapers are on microfilm (go to google.com and look up the 'ny state
newspaper project') but few if any from that early. You may find items in the
wills, probate and land records at the county seat (Canton, NY for St. Lawrence
county - not sure of the others). From the front page of www.rootsweb.com is a
'surname search' area and other areas devoted to a single surname. You might
use those to connect with others researching the same name.
Hope this helps-
