Subject: [NYSUFFOL] CARWITHY/CORWITH; CURTICE; RIDER & YOUNGS
Date: Fri, 24 Sep 1999 17:06:13 EDT
Hello. My Suffolk County ancestors are:
1. Richard CURTICE, (probable s.o. Richard CURTICE, mariner, of Devonshire,
England) of Salem, Essex Co., MA, removed to Southold, Suffolk Co., NY by
1663; d. March 1671, Southold, Suffolk Co., NY.
+ Sarah CARWITHY, d.o. of David CARWITHY/CARWITHEN, mariner, (of Marblehead
and Salem, MA) & Grace.
2. Caleb CURTICE/CURTIS, b. 24 July 1646, Salem, Essex Co., MA; m. 1 Dec.
1670, Southold, Suffolk Co., NY; d. 18 March 1730, Southold, Suffolk Co., NY.
+ Elizabeth RIDER, d.o. Thomas RIDER & Abigail; b. 1650; d. 4 Sept.
1711.
3. Samuel CURTICE/CURTIS, b. 7 July 1681, Southold, Suffolk Co., NY;
m. 6 June 1702, Southold, Suffolk Co., NY; d. 24 March 1740, Hebron, Tolland
Co., CT.
+ Mary, d. 14 Dec. 1724, Hebron, Tolland Co., CT.
David CARWITHY's will is mentioned in Howell's History of Southampton (pg.
226) in the genealogy section under CORWITH; the surname is variously spelled
CARWITHEN, CORWITH, CURWITHEN, MACARWITHY, etc. It is Welsh in origin. Many
of the early Carwithens were mariners, including David CARWITHY's son, Caleb
CARWITHY, who arrived (from Salem) in Southampton, Suffolk County in 1661,
then to Huntington, Suffolk County in 1664, then Elizabethtown, NJ in 1665,
and returned to Southampton, Suffolk County in 1674.
I am interested in learning more of Joseph YOUNGS, mariner, of Salem, who
died in Southold, Suffolk County in 1657. This Joseph YOUNGS conveyed a lot
(Philip English House) to "David CURWITHEN" & in 1659/60, David CARWITHEN
conveyed the property to Richard CURTICE¹. Joseph YOUNGS was also the master
mariner of the "Mary and Margaret" as was the father of Richard CURTICE¹.
The YOUNGS family seems intertwined with my ancestors, though I am of no
known relation to the YOUNGS; I would be interested in hearing from any
YOUNGS researchers who have information on Joseph YOUNGS, mariner, d. 1657,
Southold, Suffolk County, NY.
Is anyone else researching the family of Thomas RIDER (b. 1617) & Abigail, of
Southold, Suffolk County, parents of Elizabeth RIDER, b. 1650; wife of Caleb
CURTICE²?
I haven't yet determined which RIDER family Thomas RIDER is from. I did see
Thomas RIDER mentioned several times in "Southold Town Records," (1882).
The CURTICE/CURTIS ancestry is noted in detail in "Richard Curtice, Master
Mariner," Harlow D. Curtis, 1955. I own a copy of the book if anyone is
interested in more information on the CURTICEs of Suffolk County, etc.
Thanks for your time.
Best wishes!
Trish Curtis
