Subject: [NYSUFFOL] Patchogue Hotel Doesn't "Tolerate Jews"
Date: Thu, 29 Jun 2000 10:40:09 EDT
Dear Suffolk-Rootsers, etc.,
The following item occurred 100 years ago this week and is from the files of
the FORWARD, the daily Yiddish language newspaper:
A prominent citizen of Patchogue, Michael Furst, is told to leave the local
Clifton Hotel because he is a Jew. Furst returns to Patchogue after a long
trip to England, and he enters the hotel with a group of friends. He is about
to sign the registry when the owner approaches him and tells him that he
cannot stay in the hotel. Furst initially thinks that this is a joke, but the
owner assures him: "I don't tolerate Jews in my hotel." Furst protests loudly
and then leaves for another hotel. All Patchogue is abuzz with the story of
the hotel owner's anti-Semitism.
For those who have their copy of the 1998 or 1999 LI Population Survey or
have already downloaded the report from the Suffolk County Cooperative
Library web site (eMail me directly if you need instructions on how to access
and download the report), you'll find the Village of Patchogue (incorporated
in 1893) in the Town of Brookhaven, Suffolk County on pages 15& 24 (map) and
25 (population estimate).
Regards,
Walter Greenspan
