MURDER
Mr. John Covert was shot at Cold Springs, L.I., on Sunday evening last.
Benjamin Tillet, a farmer residing near him, has been arrested. The Brooklyn
Star gives the following account of the evidence preented before the coroner's
inquest, upon which Tillet was taken to Suffolk co. jail.
Mr. [sic] Covert testified that Tillet had brought poison into her house
twice, wishing her to give it to her husband; also that she had heard Tillet
say that either himself or her husband must die before long.
He was asked by the jury where he was on Sunday night last, and declined
answering, saying it was none of their business. He also confessed taking
a gun from his house, pretended it was for the purpose of shooting a crow.
His footsteps were also traced in the sand from the place where he stood
to take aim to his house.
Mrs. Covert is about twenty years of age, and has been married but a short
time. She is represented as having been very intimate with Tillet, and
rode out with him. They have heretofore been considered honest and industrious
people, and esteemed by the neighborhod. They are both said to be very
ignorant.
