Hello all,
This is not a query into my own family roots - but rather something that
I hope will help others who are searching in Suffolk Co.
My Uncle & Aunt raised their family in Mt. Sinai before it became known.
Back then (1950s) there was a two room school house. The ROCKLEIN family
property was on North Country Road. My uncle had a grocery store and gas
station. The house was right next door to the store. Behind the house were
"the woods".
Recently I saw what Mt. Sinai has grown into. A cousin wondered what had
become of the old cemetery in the woods.
I looked around the different genealogy sites and failed to come up with
any cemetery in Mt. Sinai.
My aunt has since told me that it was a cemetery belonging to the DAVIS
family. There were about 12 graves - some going back 100 years. There were
two graves that had a different surname - sort of off from the others,
but she cannot remember the names.
On her deed to the property was the stipulation that DAVIS family members
could have access to the cemetery and that the town would maintain it.
The house originally belonged to James Madison HULSE - and was said to
be over 100 years old - even back then.
I hope this will help someone. The deed should still be registered and
should tell the exact location of the cemetery. If anyone knows more about
this - I'd like to hear it too.
