Regarding the first Jeremiah Vail: From the book Moses Vail of Huntington,
L.I. by Wm. Penn Vail, M. D. 1947.

p. 20. Jeremiah Vail is known to have been at Salem, Mass in 1639. Thomas
[Vail} and his wife Sarah (Wentworth?) were there in 1640. . .He was
propbably a brother of Jeremiah Veale or Vail, blacksmith of Salem, Mass.
Thmas Vail was probably responsible for the invitation to Jeremiah Vail, the
blacksmith, to come to Easthampton from Salem. Jeremiah was offered a lot if
he would come and continue his business there. He came to Eaast Hampton and
Gardiner's Island and finally settled at Southold, L.I. in 1659. Jeremiah
Vail died in 1687, aged nearly 70 years.

Hope that helps.
