They certainly could have been cousins. I have a number of Long Island
Smith/Wood marriages in my database, and some Platt/Smith marriages, and the
Platts and the Woods start interconnecting in England, and continue to do it
for a couple hundred years after they get over here. Plus, a number of the
Woods in my line were merchants of one kind or another before the Revolution,
so they had a chance to meet people that didn't just live next door.
