1835 JOURNAL OF SARAH ANN B. JACKSON
by Jan Philpot
During a renovation project in Laurel County, Kentucky some
years back, tucked between rafters or walls of an old house, a
man found an 1835 journal written by Sarah Ann B. JACKSON. It is
fragile and the ink is faded and difficult to read. He kept it,
and happened to mention it to me. I convinced him to let me
borrow it long enough to transcribe it. He does not want it to
be known who has it or where it is, and he does not want to give
it up, but he agreed to let me transcribe it and find out what
I could about it, so I did. The transcription is 14 typewritten
pages.
How the journal wound up in southeastern Kentucky is beyond me.
It became more and more obvious as I transcribed that it
certainly was not written there, and there is no clue as to how
it wound up there. The journal is a gold mine of historical and
genealogical information, if we can peg where she was when she
wrote it.
I filtered through the clues written in the words of a well-
educated young woman with flowery speech, and below have listed
the things I think would mean something to a person researching
whatever area it is. If we can find the places she mentions, I
think the journal will be important to people who either are
researching the area or kin to Sarah or the people she mentions.
The clues as I see them are:
