I think I remember being told that Salmon was a newspaper journalist
(or maybe just a nosey neighbor!!) and was interested in recording these
things. Thank goodness! Also, there is a book called "Griffin's Journal"
which lists follows many family genealogies.
If you happen to make the trip to the Library at Riverhead, the Historical
Society is right next door, and for a small fee, you can use their research
files!

Hi Kath -
Just to clarify things :-) I think you may be confusing the Riverhead Public
Library with the library located inside the Suffolk County Historical Society.
The Riverhead library is part of the Suffolk County Library System and does
have a small local history room - although I have never been in it, so they
may have the Salmon records.
Directly across the street is the S. C. Historical Society. The library
inside has a wonderful collection of history and genealogy for Suffolk County
( although much more for the Riverhead area & futher east) - not only MANY
published family genealogies but also ancestral files of SCHS members, bible
records that have been transcribed & organized from many donated bibles -
and diaries & correspondence from old local families, to name a few.
They have the 'Salmon Records" which as you correctly stated is compilation
of early ( mid 1700s-1850) marriages & deaths ( maybe births also) from the
east end of L.I. The Salmon Records have been published by the NY G & B - so
may be found elsewhere.
What is not found anywwhere else is " Aunt Ida's Collection" This WAS a very
nosey lady :-) who collected newspaper clippings of all local ( and some not
so local ) Riverhead Town events. Births, marriages, deaths,
anniversaries, birthday parties - if it hapened, Aunt Ida knew about it. There
are 14 scrapbooks of newspaper clippings dating from approx 1870s to early
1900s. These clippings have been indexed and there are several (6 at least)
card catalogue drawers devoted to Aunt Ida.
The library at SCHS is only open Wednesdays, Thursdays & Saturdays from 12:30
- 4:30. There is a $2.00 per day fee for non-members to use the library. The
address is 300 West Main St., Riverhead just about 2 miles east of the Tanger
Outlets.
