Fred:
Good news on the Hahns. I found four Hahn families in the 1865 Southold
census, and five Hahn burials in the Frost and Meigs microfilmed
cemetery transcriptions. I copied the pages and will mail to you if you
give me an address, but here's an outline.
The 1865 state census of Southhold Town is a hand-written transcription
of the original prepared by volunteers at the East Hampton Public
Library in 1940. It can be found on FHL microfilm 2057294. It's
divided into four EDs but it doesn't show towns. The information
included is name, age, relationship to head of household and county,
state or country of birth. The households are numbered in sequence in
each ED. The Hahns are:
2nd ED
HH 107, Sarah Hahn, 56, born France, with 6 children, 28 to 13 in ages,
the oldest 2 born in Queens, the rest in Suffolk County. 2 of the
children are Helen and Benjamin, no Louise.
3rd ED
HH 1, Philip G. Hahn, 22, and wife, no places of birth shown
HH 81, living with Joseph C. Booth & family
George P. Hahn, 21, and wife, both born Suffolk County
HH 309 Godfrey Hahn, 49, born France, and wife born Germany
A separate census of farmers included with the above shows that Philip
G. Hahn owned 45 acres of land, 1 horse, 3 cows and 0 oxen.
You may know by now that Strasburg is in that contested area known as
Alsace-Lorraine that changed hands between France and Germany many times
up to 1914. It is now permanently a part of France but the population
is of mixed Franco-German ancestry. Sarah, HH 107 above, was probably
the widow of your ancestor, George (see below). I found no proof that
Godfrey and George were brothers, but it seems a likely conclusion.
Joseph Frost, Long Island Cemetery Records, is on FHL film 0017118.
There are 13 short volumes. Vol. 13 is Presbyterian and Willow Hill
Cemeteries in Southold.
In Presbyterian, I found 9 Hahn burials, including Godfrey.
In Willow Hill, there are 4 Hahns, all the family of George P.
Alice H. Meigs, Suffolk County Cemeteries, is on FHL film 0017925.
There are 3 volumes.
In Vol. I, Arshamomaque Cemetery, there is 1 Hahn, your George, born
1809, died 1864, no place of birth shown.
The only Louise mentioned in census or burial records is the Louise,
wife of Lewis A. Brown, I wrote about last week. Lewis A. Brown,
adult, is not in any Southold census, 1850 through 1880, nor in
transcribed Southold marriage records, but Louisa's death is in the
transcribed death records.
You figure it out.
