The town of Fithian, IL., was named after Dr. William Fithian, b. April 7, 1799, in Cincinnati, Ohio, son of George Fithian, tavern-keeper.At some point around the time of the Civil War (1860-65), several thousand acres of open prairie in the west-central portion of the county were acquired by Dr. Fithian. He was very active in the movements which resulted in bringing several railroads of Danvill, IL. In 1871 he gave to the I.B.&W. road the right of way through a large tract of land in Oakwood Twp. and 5 acres of land. The village of Fithian on this line of road was founded and named by the company in honor to the doctor. He was a friend of Abraham Lincoln, a home of his in Danville, IL, has been made into a museum and contains many references to Mr. Lincoln.
I visited Fithian, IL, about 15 years ago, it had a combination bank and post office, the only building left of the town that began in the decade of the1860's. I am a descendant of the Fithian family through my mother who was a Fithian. Israel Fithian, was the man through whom I am descended; his father was Glover, who was a son of Lot and Judith (unknown) Fithian. Hope this helps. Wilma
