Each state has it's own laws regarding "legal" name changes.
However it is not unlawful for you to assume that spelling without making a
court document.
You can legally use any name you want to as long as you violate no laws, or
attempt to decieve anyone. (All you have to do is start using it) You may
want to change it through teh Tax authorities, or publish in a paper your
intent three times in a thirty day period, near where you live, under
"Pubvlic Notice".)
If you want to make it official check with your County, or Burrough, Court,
and getteh applications from the clerk, it is usually a simple procedure,
and the legal name will be binding and on records. This is something you can
likely do without legal assistance, and is no more complicated than declaring
the new name, acknowledging the old one, and stating that you have no intent
to defraud, or represent yourself as someone else.
Another route would be to amend your Birth Certificate, although this method
is rather drawn out.
