Dear Linda:
First, get a copy of his death certificate. The NY State Death Index is
available at the NARA NE, 201 Varick St., Manhattan. It will tell you what
village he died in and then you can request a death certificate either from
that village or from Albany. It will tell you where he is buried. That is,
if he died in NY State...
Second, the cemetery needs at least one date of death of a person buried in
a plot, OR the exact plot number with range, section, etc. Next time you
are there, you may want to see if there are any cemetery workers in the
vicinity who can pinpoint for you exactly what the plot number is. The
cemetery then should be able to give you an interment list of everyone
buried in that particular plot.
Third, although it sounds strange, many people do erect markers for people
not actually buried in a particular plot. Some people may have died at sea
or in such a remote location that the body could not be transported. Or,
the body was never recovered. I found one in Oakland Cemetery in Sag Harbor
that memorialized a brother who died in Tuscon AZ but who is buried in
Leadville, Colorado! Not in Sag Harbor. So, many times the loved ones just
want to have a marker near where they are buried.
If, when you do get the death certificate, it says he is buried at St.
Joseph's, take a copy of the certificate with you to show them. Also, check
the name. He may not have been buried under the name you commonly know him
by.
Best regards. Nancy.
