Subject: [NYSUFFOL] Watermill is now Water Mill
Date: Tue, 4 Jun 2002 13:39:28 EDT

On 5/29/02, Russell Brown () and on 6/1/02, David Roberts
() raised some issues about the eMail I posted on May 29
about the recent name change for the Hamlet of Water Mill in the Town of
Southampton, Suffolk County wherein I pointed out that concomitant with the
2000 Census Watermill was now Water Mill.

I eMailed Roy Fedelem, Principal Planner for the Long Island Regional
Planning Board and asked him: "I've been told that the post office has been
Water Mill (2 words) for a long time and that long time residents of the area
always used the 2 word name, not the 1 word name. Can you provide some
history on this that I can share with others?"

Roy Fedelem replied: "There has been some confusion over which way to write
the name for a long time. Our 1858 map has it as two words and the History
of Suffolk County, 1883 has it as one word. After discussions with Town
officials and others I resolved to recognize it as two words and requested
the U. S. Census Bureau to use two words in the 2000 Census. They did not,
so for the Census it was listed as one word. I believe two words would be
the correct way of referring to Water Mill."

By the way, Roy Fedelem is a descendent of Robert Coe of Huntington and
Jamaica fame and his wife is a descendent of the Smiths of Smithtown fame,
and that ain't no bull.

Walter Greenspan
