Rooters, Rootsers & all Smiths:

Friday's (August 2) NEWSDAY has an item (the 'item' and its URL appear after
my name) that the oldest house in East Moriches -- a wood frame colonial
built in 1692 by Richard Smith, whose father and namesake was the founder of
Smithtown -- is on the market. The house had been occupied by Smith's
descendants until 1941. It has since been converted it into a legal
four-family dwelling.

Listing price: $750,000; taxes: $5,669; Lot size: 2.38 acres; Square
footage: 4,626; Number of rooms: 17; Amenities: Detached one-car garage,
barn, two converted outhouses and two fireplaces.

East Moriches is a hamlet (an unincorporated community) in the southeastern
part of the Town of Brookhaven, Suffolk County. There are 8 villages
(incorporated municipalities) and 36 hamlets all or partly in the Town of
Brookhaven. There are no cities and 10 towns in Suffolk County. There are 2
Indian reservations in Suffolk County.

Beginning on the north and moving in a clockwise direction, the Hamlet of
East Moriches in the Town of Brookhaven is bordered on the north by the
Hamlet of Manorville and the Hamlet of Eastport; on the east by the Hamlet of
Eastport and Moriches Bay; on the south by Moriches Bay; and, on the west by
the Hamlet of Center Moriches.

And, as occurs in every one of Suffolk County's 157 communities (0 cities, 31
villages and 126 hamlets), the hamlet and the postal zone that use the same
name, have different borders: There are places with an "East Moriches, NY
11940" mailing address that are in the Hamlet of Eastport and places with a
"Manorville, NY 11949" mailing address that are in the Hamlet of East
Moriches, among other anomalies.

For those who have their copy of the 2001 LI Population Survey or have
already downloaded the report from the Long Island Power Authority web site
(eMail me directly if you need instructions on how to access and download the
report), you'll find the Hamlet of East Moriches in the Town of Brookhaven,
Suffolk County on pages 14 & 24 (map) and 25 (population estimate).

I hope this information is useful or, at least, interesting.

The Oldest House in Town?
-- by Tommi Jackson

August 2, 2002

Location: East Moriches

Price: $750,000

Taxes: $5,669

Lot size: 2.38 acres

Square footage: 4,626

Number of rooms: 17

Amenities: Detached one-car garage, barn, two converted outhouses and two
fireplaces

Believed to be the oldest house in East Moriches, this wood frame colonial
was built in 1692 by Richard Smith, whose father and namesake was the founder
of Smithtown.

The house had been occupied by Smith's descendants until 1941. The present
owner acquired the house 28 years ago from her husband's parents, who
purchased the property in 1952 and converted it into a legal four-family
dwelling.

Inside are seven bedrooms, five baths, and a brick and fieldstone partial
basement. The building is an ideal venue for a bed and breakfast, according
to Phyllis A. Singler, listing agent at Re/Max Real Estate Center in
Bellport. But the interior, she noted, needs some work, as does the front
wrap-around porch.

Jackson at 212-251-6610 or by e-mail at .
