Rooters, Rootsers & all Youngs:
Friday's (August 16) NEWSDAY has an article describing how Gary Laube of
Southold looks to have hit historical paydirt.
Inside an old trunk he purchased a decade ago was what he and some experts
believe is the oldest known flag made in America, dating to the late 1600s.
That would make it a century older than any other American-made flag.
He bought the small 18th-century trunk from the family of a descendant of one
of the oldest families in Southold, for several hundred dollars. He was
primarily interested in a woven coverlet inside that showed it was made by
Mary Youngs in 1833.
Laube believes it was made for a Southold Colonial militia calvary unit
commanded by Col. John Youngs. He bought the trunk from a descendant of both
Youngs and Mary Youngs, whose name was on the coverlet. While he has no proof
to back up his assertion, he says "the circumstantial evidence is just
overwhelming."
