Subject: [NYSUF] Chapman surname on LI
Date: Mon, 9 Feb 2004 10:40:50 -0500
Hello -
I've just joined the Suffolk list at RootsWeb, and found a note from
2002 in the archives showing some data on the CHAPMAN family on LI.
I have encountered a stone wall in my search for parents/family of
Thankful (unknown), wife of Eliakim DAVIS. My GGG Grandfather,
Chapman DAVIS (1758-1837) was the son of Eliakim and Thankful. I
have often wondered why the name "Chapman" appears for the first time
among more traditional DAVIS given names, so I am now thinking that
the maiden name of Chapman DAVIS' mother might have been CHAPMAN.
According to gravestones in the Eliakim DAVIS ("private") cemetery,
Mt. Sinai, Long Island, NY (sometimes known as the Davis cemetery on
the Barrandi place), Eliakim DAVIS (1721-1808), son of Benjamin DAVIS
(1690-1769/70) was married to Thankful (died 8 Apr 1815, Ae 85)
[hence b. abt 1730].
At least one source states that Thankful's last name was PHILLIPS,
but I have not found any corroborating records. Inquiries to living
members of the PHILLIPS family have so far not produced any records
of a PHILLIPS daughter named Thankful.
I will appreciate any help - suggestions - insight!
Regards,
