David Roberts () has asked me to post this query on his
behalf:
begin query
John V. Denton & his wife Caroline had only one daughter that I can find any
reference to:
1850 - Oyster Bay
Caroline Denton -7; b. ca. 1843
Probably named for her mother
1860 - Oyster Bay
Caroline - 18; b. ca. 1842
w/ her father John and her grandfather Samuel.
Both men were widowed by 1860; Samuel himself only had a few months to live.
1870 - Oyster Bay
Now Caroline is a married woman w/ a few kids
Valentine Bates - 33 [b. ca. 1837] - farmer
Caroline Bates - 27 [b. ca. 1843]
Louisa V. Bates - 6 [b. ca. 1864]
John D. Bates - 4 [b. ca. 1866]
Samuel E. Bates - 2 [b. ca. 1868]
William F. Bates - 9/12 [b. 1869/1870]
John Denton [Caroline's father w/ this family]
I'm 99.9% that for each census these people were on Lloyd's Neck, which was
still in Oyster Bay Town, Queens Co. until 1886.
The 1839-1864 "Long Islander" Index has the marriage of Valentine & Caroline
in the April 4th, 1862 paper; so they prob. married sometime in March 1862.
1880
John is still out on Lloyd's Neck, living with his brother Jonah Denton, but
Caroline & Valentine must have moved by this time to Indiana, since 1900 White
County, Indiana, shows a child born in Indiana in 1877.
I can not find these people in Indiana in 1880, although the birth of the son
in the state in 1877 per 1900 census indicated they should be in Indiana.
1894:
John V. Denton died in Reynolds, White County, Indiana. My "Deaths Reported
by the 'Long Islander' 1891-1900" says he moved to Indiana to live w/ his
daughter.
1900
Big Creek Township, White County, Indiana
Valentine Bates - Jan. 1832 - NY - farmer
Caroline Bates - Nov. 1842 - NY
Samuel Bates - June 1868 - NY - saddler
Robert Bates - Sept. 1877 - IN
Valentine & Caroline were married 38 years; that agrees w/ the 1862 date in
the "Long Islander" Index
Birth of Robert in 1877 in Indiana probably accounts for the family not being
in Oyster Bay in 1880.
Caroline was the mother of 7 of which 6 were living in 1900.
Of these 7, we have listed:
Louisa V. b. ca. 1864
John D. b. ca. 1866
Samuel E. b. ca. 1868
William F. b. ca. 1870
Robert b. ca. 1877
Two are unknown; finding them on 1880 certainly would help, but so far I
haven't found this family.
1900
Big Creek Township, White County, Indiana
John Bates b. Dec. 1866 - IN - farmer
Fannie Bates b. April 1867 - IN
Mary C. Bates b. Feb. 1893 - IN
Ralph Bates b. May 1898 - IN
John & Fannie m. 8 years
Fannie mother of 2; both alive in 1900.
1910
Big Creek Township, White County, Indiana
John Bates - 43 - IN - farmer - general farming
Fannie L. - 43 - IN
Ralph K. - 10 - IN
daughter - unclear - perhaps Doris - 7 - IN
John - 6 - IN
In both of these John Bates says he was born in Indiana [although 1870 has
him born in NY], but on both 1900 & 1910, he says both parents were born in New
York.
Fannie was mother of 4 children, 3 alive in 1910.
Small problem w/ this however.
I found John & Fannie on www.findagrave.com buried at the Lane Cemetery,
Reynolds, White County, Indiana
John D. Bates 1866-1936
Fannie L. Bates 1867-1929
Linda Bates, daughter of J. D. & F. L. Bates 11 February 1898 - 19 January
1901
She is NOT listed on 1900, but is there an error & she was recorded as Mary
C. ?
Neither Mary C. & Linda appear on 1910; Fannie L. has 1 dead child by 1910
... Linda ? or Mary C. ?
She has 3 living children: Ralph, John, & the daughter whose name might be
Doris.
John D's brother:
1900
Monon, Monon Township, White County, Indiana
William Bates - Nov. 1865 - NY - harness maker
single; living w/ family of William H. Lowe
William's a bit older than he was on 1870 Oyster Bay, but he states he was
born in NY as were both his parents.
MORE RESEARCH NEEDS TO BE DONE, but this is a start on these people.
Can anyone on either the Suffolk or Nassau lists, or the New York-Indiana
list, add anything ?
