Hello Listers,
I'm seeking other researchers of these surnames in the Saugerties area of
Ulster County to compare notes with.
MAHER - DUNN - O'REILLY - HACKETT - CUDDIHY - RAFFERTY & FEENEY.
Siblings Thomas and Ellen MAHER/MAHAR arrived in Saugerties ca. 1855-1860.
Both were born in Roscrea, Tipperary County, Ireland with Thomas birthdate
ca 1834-1837 and Ellen's ca 1838-1840. Family stories state that the
MAHERs first arrived at Syracuse but so far no documentation has been found
to prove this story.
Sibling Ellen MAHER appears to either have remained single or married after
the 1880 census. When her brother Thomas was widowed following the birth
of his last child in 1870/1871, Ellen moved into his household where she
kept house and raised Thomas' children.
Sibling Thomas MAHER m. Bridget DUNN ca 1860 probably at Saugerties. All 6
of their children were born at Saugerties and baptized at St. Mary's of the
Snow Catholic Church. Those children, together with their known spouses
were:
Richard D. MAHER bap. 1863. He married Louisa O'REILLY (daughter of James
OREILLY and Bridget LYNCH) at Saugerties on 8 Sept 1885. They had 6
children and eventually ended up in Boston, Mass.
Patrick MAHER bap 1863. On Sep 17, 1888 at Quarryville he married
Catherine HACKETT (daughter of John HACKETT and Catherine WARD). They had
4 children and moved between Saugerties, Hudson, NJ and Boston, MA.
Michael MAHER bap about 1865. He married Johanna CUDDIHY in 1885.
(daughter of Nicholas CUDDIHEE and Catherine HENESY). Michael was dead by
1895. This union produced 3 children and indications are that this family
remained in the Saugerties area after Michael's death.
Margaret MAHER was bap 1868 and in 1883 she married Thomas RAFFERTY (son of
Daniel RAFFERTY and Bridget CUNNINGHAM). Margaret and Thomas produced 14
children between 1884 and 1910. Although some of their children moved from
the area, Margaret and Thomas remained in the Saugerties area until at an
advanced age and widowed, Margaret moved to NYC to the home of one of her
sons.
Thomas MAHER m. Catherine FEENEY or FENEY in New Jersey on 6 Feb 1890. The
FEENEY family was originally from Saugerties arriving their from West
Meath, Ireland. Catherine FEENEY was the daughter of John FEENEY/FENEY and
Ellen FARRELL. Thomas and Catherine (known as Kitt) lived in NJ and
Massachusetts. They had one son who was a Boston Policeman.
Mary MAHER was born about 1870 at Saugerties. She appears with this family
in the census for 1870 and 1880. Nothing else is currently known about
her. She may have moved with her widowed father to Boston just after the
1880 census was taken. The 1890 census is lost and I can't find her in the
1900 census - but she may have married by that time.
I have much more information on these families than what is posted here.
My hope is that one or more of you also have ties to these surnames in the
Ulster County area and would like to compare information. I can be reached
by e-mail at:
Thank you for your time. I hope to hear from one or more of you.
