I am reposting this message sent to the list back in February as to the 1850
census for Westchester County. As you can see - West Farms IS on the 1850
census. Although the film numbers at LDS don't coincide with the ones below,
I would bet that the SECOND film would be the one that would have West
Farms.
After several days of frustration searching through the 1850 Census and
finding that the page numbers in the index don't match what is on the pages,
I set about trying to figure out why. <snip> Well, the reason is that the
1850 Census index for the Westchester County Towns of New Rochelle, Yonkers,
Rye, White Plains, Harrison, and North Castle is REALLY the index for the
1860 census for those towns. You will find the exact same page numbers and
names in both indexes for these towns. Also, there is nothing in any index
of the 1850 Census for Greenburg, East Chester, Westchester Town,
Mamaroneck, Pelham or Scarsdale. Therefore, if you are looking for
ancestors in these towns on the 1850 Census, perhaps knowing the page
numbers where the TOWNS can be found on the census roll (or CD) may shorten
your search. This listing is for Microcopy 432, Roll 615, Westchester County
NY 1850 Census.
Greenburg starts on page 1A
North Castle starts on page 53A
Rye starts on page 80A
Harrison starts on page 111A;
Scarsdale starts on page 126A
White Plains starts on page 131A.
Mamaroneck starts on page 148A
New Rochelle starts on page 160A
Pelham is on page 190A
Yonkers at page 197A
Eastchester is on page 247A
West Farms is at 267A
Westchester Town is 320A
I would note also that the index for Microcopy 432, Roll 614, Westchester
County NY 1850 census IS CORRECT.
I hope this information helps to shorten everyone's search. Feel free to
post it, pass it on, etc.
Cheers!
Marti
