Dear Judy,

I saw your generous offer to the group a couple weeks ago to do look-ups
in the 1900 census.

Would you please do a look-up on what might be a somewhat challenging
family in Michigan?

First problem: the head of household died in 1896 leaving a wife,
Zwaantje Brinks, and seven children: Ralph, George, John, Henry, Ben,
Herman, Harry.

Second problem: Zwaantje remarried a "Mr." Helms a "few" years later. I
don't know if that was pre or post census!

So, we're either searching for a Zwaantje Brinks as head of household,
or a _____Helms as head of household.!

In either event, the household was located in Vogel Center, MI.

If I've given you an overwhelming task, please don't attempt the search.
I will understand.

Hi All
I have the 1900 federal census for entire US if anyone wants a lookup. Not part of the Ancestry.com frrebie that seems to be causing so much trouble. I'm glad to hear of the problem, as I was considering getting it. Mine is with genealogy.com. Judy of Virginia
Pat Wardell <> wrote: Hi -- I'm coming in to this discussion a bit late, but I certainly
can echo your frustration with using the Ancestry census images.
While it's great to be able to access them in your own home, it does
seem particularly difficult to locate individuals even when you have
an indexed reference -- the page no's, as you've discovered, don't
always "match up" and the Ward and district descriptions, when
available, don't always make the hunt any easier.

Like you, I'd love to find some folks in NYC and Brooklyn, but since
the years I want to look at are not indexed, the hunt through
thousands of pages is just too forbidding.

But maybe I can help with the image size. I'm working on a Macintosh,
so the Mr.Sid (Lizard Tech) software that you download to use the
online images may be different. But here's how it works for me --

After selecting the census year, state, county, etc., when the image
appears in the small box, I usually click the box at the bottom left
of the image frame that says "View Full Screen" -- doing that makes
the viewing area take up the entire monitor/screen area. The active
default tool is a magnification tool (looks like a small magnifying
glass with a plus sign in it) -- This tool automatically appears in
place of the cursor when the image is loaded and appears on your
monitor.

Use this tool to magnify the image (zoom in) until the image is
readable. At the top left of the image area is a small display of
tools available -- if you move your cursor over one tool and leave it
there (without clicking) for a second or two, a balloon will appear
telling you what that particular tool will do. Clicking on any tool
activates it. Aside from the two sizing tools (plus or minus to zoom
in or out) the only other tool I generally use is the one that looks
like a hand, for panning and moving around the page image.

I hope this is a little helpful to you. I share your frustration. I
assume that sooner or later Ancestry.com will have indexes to all the
census years, and that should make it easier.
