Hi Jan,

On the NZSG CD "New Zealand Marriages 1836-1956"
(http://www.genealogy.org.nz/Sales_11.aspx?CategoryId=11) there is only
one marriage recorded between an Elizabeth GOODSON and a SMITH:

William John SMITH & Elizabeth GOODSON, 1883/0030

Not quite the name you're looking for, but around the right time as she
would have been 18 or 19 at the time. You will need to order a copy of
the marriage registration from Births, Deaths & Marriages (BDM,
http://www.bdm.govt.nz/) to discover any further information. Get the
printout, not the legal certificate, for family history purposes.
http://www.dia.govt.nz/pubforms.nsf/URL/FamilyRecordResearch.pdf/$file/FamilyRecordResearch.pdf
tells you what information you'll find in the registration.

If you are a member of the New Zealand Society of Genealogists (NZSG,
http://www.genealogy.org.nz/) you should check with their Certificates
Collection before placing an order at BDM, in case they are holding
something of interest - this is much cheaper than purchasing the
documents, and a good use of your membership.

I also searched through all the Frank and Francis SMITHs but couldn't
see any marrying someone with a surname similar to GOODSON.

With a surname like SMITH, I think it would be a good idea for you to
have your own copy of the Marriages CD to sit and search through for
this family. It is not expensive. :-)

I also tried to find some of your other people on the disk where you
knew the spouse's surname. I couldn't find a Joan SMITH marrying a
WALL. There are no Sylvia SMITHs on the CD at all, nor any Bill or
William BROOKS marrying a SMITH. No Valda SMITH marrying a PETCH, and
no Austin PETCH on the CD

With this many strikeouts, I'm starting to wonder if the family stayed
in New Zealand. Do you know where this Ashfield is/was that you
mentioned? I can't find Ashfield in New Zealand at Google Maps
(http://maps.google.com/) or AA Maps (http://maps.aa.co.nz/) or in my
1952 "The New Zealand Guide".

Have you tried checking Archway (http://archway.archives.govt.nz/), the
online index for Archives New Zealand (http://www.archives.govt.nz/) for
all the names you have? If you're looking for more resources, you could
try the NZSG CD "New Zealand Burial Locator"
(http://www.genealogy.org.nz/Sales_11.aspx?CategoryId=11) as well.
Don't forget that your local genealogy group or library, and your state
library, may hold New Zealand resources that may be useful to you.

Sorry I can't be of more help with finding your people at this stage,
but hope I've given you some ideas. :-)

Kind Regards,
Wendy Howard
