Hi,
For sure its probably much easier to trace direct ancestry through the one
surname, but to me it would be so incomplete! Everyone counts! That's why
my trees has so many branches, twigs and a few complicated tangled vines
still unraveled.
My ancestory includes; Irish, Welsh, Scottish, English, French, Acadian, and
if ''way back there counts', add in a bit of German and Dutch also.
My Gram's ancestory creates my link to Ireland, as her ancestors established
themselves in this new county in 1846. My Ma's ancestory is the link to
Beaubassin and Port Royal and the Morins, Chaissons, Martins, Bernards and
others of early Acadia - this family link was a special discovery which I
treasure. The rich heritage of Acadia is a source of pride in my family
tree. My Grandma's families include Atetta Zailen, born 1492, married in
1528 to Lodowick Van-Wesek in Germany, both my 13th grandparents - they are
connected to my New England, 'Boone-Wightam Families' who came to NB as
Loyalists in 1783. Grandma's family line also leads me to ancestors John
Alden and Priscilla Mullins of the Mayflower...
And I could go on because I find all these people and links through my
female ancestors so fascinating.... for sure every bit as equal and
exciting as my lines through my male ancestors.
Part of the 'wonder' of finding my roots and tracing my genealogy is
gaining a sense of identity with so many different fascinating people.
I make room for everyone, 'because I am, because of who they were'.
So that is how I view the approach to genealogy because that female
ancestor who went through childbirth and produced that 'link' that led to me
is 'honoured' in my family tree', and without her, I just wouldn't be 'me'.
