Hi Brian, I started my research 5 years ago and just started with the
immediate line back from my mother. As I got further addicted to this
hobby I found myself wondering about the other lines of the family. I
know have an almost complete genealogy of my mother's and father's
lines. It has become a challenge to find all of the lines. I have
about 2500 people listed for my father's family and about 1000 for my
mothers.

As far as your niece, her children are descendents just as you are, so
they should be included. Just because their parents weren't married
doesn't disqualify them from your family. In Family Tree Maker there is
a list of union description one of which is "Partners". Maybe this
would be a good term for their parents.

Up until now I have not chased "daughtered out" lines where female offspring have married into other families. I've recorded the vital stats dates and places for the couple but left the rest to the groom's descendants and sundry other relatives.

That, I suppose, is one question. What is the right way to record a common-law relationship? Now her mum (my sister-in-law) has suggested I record their two kids for a complete record. By the ground rules I've set for myself so far I'm not sure I can say yes to that. Do it for her and I feel I'd have break one of my search rules and go back to hunt down progeny data on all the other "daughtered out" lines in the tree I've assembled. I'm thoroughly confused and need the advice and suggestions of the assembled body.
