Hi I am looking for any information about Constable Thomas (or Henry Thomas) ALLEN.
He is supposed to be the father of one of the Manchester Martyrs, Wiliam Philip ALLEN.
William was (arrested) and hung as William O'Mara ALLEN on 23 Nov 1867 at Salford, Manchester, but in his speech from the dock he stated his name was Wiliam Philip ALLEN and that he was born and reared in Bandon, Cork.
Constable ALLEN supposedly was the keeper of the Bridewell at Bandon from about 1850 to 1868.
Numerous sources I have read give so much varying information.
It is suggested that Constable ALLEN was at Tipperary, where Wiliam Philip ALLEN was supposed to be born about Apr 1848 (from his goal admission record) and that he went to Bandon about 1850 and resigned shortly after the hanging of William.
1847/1848 were very bad (Black) years in Tipperary with the famine. I don't know if Thomas was a constable at Tipperary or only at Bandon.
Thomas is supposed to have died in 1909 and said in old age ‘that he had no sympathy with the young martyr's principles’.
Apart from the gaol admission record and William's death certificate everything else I have seen is from books and newspapers, I have not found any original sources.
There is a memorial for the Manchester Martyrs at Tipperary and in Manchester.
If anyone has any information or suggestions I would be glad to receive them.
