FRANCES HURD MAYER 1920-2008
Frances Hurd Mayer, of Pensacola, Florida, passed away on December 24, 2008 at a local assisted living center at the age of 88. She was born Harriet Frances Hurd on April 9, 1920 in Boston, Massachusetts. Frances graduated from Thayer Academy in Braintree, MA, attended Simmons College in Boston, and graduated from Chandler Secretarial School. She was employed by the Boston Newspaper before her engagement to Ensign Nicolas Mayer. They were married on June 7, 1943 and moved to Pensacola in 1958. Frances was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Officer's Wives League, she was very active with the American Red Cross Board of Directors, Pensacola Historical Preservation Society, and the Gray Ladies.
Frances was preceded in death by her father Stephen Perkins Hurd, her mother Emily Baxter Hurd, husband Retired Commander Nicolas John Mayer, and her brother Richard Perkins Hurd.
She is survived by her sons, John Perkins Mayer (wife Beverly) of Humbolt, TN; Robert Adams Mayer of Brewton, AL; Stephen Hurd Mayer (wife Cathy) of Pensacola, FL; Grandchildren, Lisa Marie Robinson of Nashville, TN; Jeffery Douglas Taylor of Greenville, TN; Amanda Hurd Mayer Killebrew and John Perkins Mayer, Jr. both of Nashville, TN; Dudley Mayer Guitton of Augusta, GA; Roberta Leigh Mayer Holt and Amy Kathryn Mayer Barkhouse both of Brewton, AL; Nicolas Miles Mayer, Meghan Vaughn Mayer, and Meredith Adams Mayer all of Pensacola, FL; and 9 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by brother-in-law and sister-in-law John and Millee Mayer of Foley, AL and a sister-in-law Elizabeth Bigalow of Princeton, NJ.
Memorial service will be held on Sunday, December 28, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. at Bayview Fisher-Pou Chapel.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Red Cross, PO Box 4002018, Des Moines, IA 50340-2018.
