Beth,

While not connected to your line specifically that I know of, but maybe as I have a possible Odell grandmother who is not connected, I do have a lot on your line. I am connected to the Williams, Prather/Prater, Sprigg , Hilleary, and others in your line. Here is what I have.

I sincerely hope everyone reading this forum will review this message in the spirit in which it is written. I would like to caution people to be critical in their evaluation of posted data. GenForum, LDS, lists, etc. are great places for connecting to other people researching the same lines and as jumping off points. They cannot and do not replace the documented original source material in proving lines and relationships.

In particular I am referring to "Odell Origins" and earlier messages regarding the parentage of Thomas Odell, Sr. of Maryland.

"All Odell's descend from one common ancestor": The person who posted it was not the original author and this is not meant to be critical of her. I have a great deal of difficulty believing that all people of any one surname can trace their ancestors back to one common immigrant. It just doesn't generally work that way.

In the case of the Odells of Bedfordshire, England, there was more than one Odell family in that area and probably more than one immigrant from there to the colonies.

In the article, it is stated that the Maryland Odell line started with Thomas who was originally from the MA/CT Odell's. Not a proven fact.

As a descendant of Thomas Odell, Sr. of Maryland, I know that no one has ever been able to prove his parentage. Walter George Odell who researched Thomas for 30+ years, believed that it was more probable that Thomas was the son or somehow related to one Henry Odell who was in Westmoreland Co., VA by 1634. Calvert Co., MD is extremely close to Westmoreland Co., VA, Thomas could have simply moved across fuzzy colony lines.

Others who have posted to this forum and the Odell list have stated, but have not proven by documentation, that he was the son of Reginald Odell and his wife, Priscilla, of MA. Again, this is undocumented theory not necessarily true and the source of the data is not an original, official document.

This is a wonderful forum for connecting to others and learning more about the possibilities of our heritage(s). I hope it continues for a long time to come. Please remember, nothing replaces old-fashioned, head in the books/microfilm at the state archives.

Henry ODELL and (-?)   Not proven.

Husband: maybe Henry Odell

Speculation that the following refers to Henry-- a Henry Odell was mentioned in the Land Patent of Valentine Patten for 1,000 acres at the head of the Oqui River in Westmoreland Co., VA who transferred 20 persons into VA which included Henry Odell . The record was dated 6 June 1654. On 12 December 1654, we learned in OD Spring 95 that a Robert Hubbard was given credit for transferring 32 persons into Virginia, including a Henry Odell, also of Westmoreland County, VA. (The above land was in Stafford County, VA, 1664.)

Calvert County, MD was created in 1654, the exact same year that Henry Odell was transported into Westmoreland County, VA. (Calvert Co. is just north of St. Mary's Co. and adjoins Prince Georges Co. on the east and Anne Arundel Co. on the south). Walter George Odell in his "Origin of the Odells of Maryland" stated in his account, " It is believed that Thomas Odell came up from Virginia. There is an old tradition with the Ohio Odells, that the emigrant was shipwrecked off the coast of Virginia in about 1650, and landed in that colony." We also learn that Campbell in his "History of the Colony and Ancient Dominion of Virginia" gives an account of the "Virginia Merchant" in 1659, drifting into the York River in a helpless condition. The 320 passengers were landed somewhere on Col. Ludlow's plantation near Williamsburg. Following a dispute over religous freedoms, some members of this group, including a John Norwood, removed to Maryland and received land in the newly established county of Anne Arundell, MD. Norwood had also received land in Calvert Co.

June 28, 1727 in Prince Georges County, Maryland.

Notes for H ENRY " T HOMAS" O DELL, S R. :

Thomas Odell, the earliest known progenitor of our Odell family, is thought to have been born in about 1660 in England. Although the actual date that Thomas immigrated into the Province of Maryland is not known, he may possibly have arrived there as early as 1682. Thomas was later married during the month of April 1691, most likely in Anne Arundel County, Maryland, to a widow named Sarah (Ridgely) Brewer. Sarah, who is thought to have been born in about 1664 in Anne Arundel County, was the widow of John Brewer, and the daughter of Henry Ridgely and Elizabeth Howard.

After their marriage, Thomas and Sarah resided within the boundaries of All Hollows Parish in Anne Arundel County. During the years 1694 through 1698, Thomas was described in various Anne Arundel County documents as being one of the three county Coroners, as being a militia officer, and as being one of Her Majesties Justices for that County.

On 6 April 1700, Thomas purchased two tracts of land from James Murray which were located in Baltimore County, Maryland.   These tracts were called "Athel," which consisted of 617 acres, and "Murray's Addition," which consisted of 89 acres.   Both of these tracts were situated north of the Patapsco River on what was called "Hunting Ridge." On 25 March 1701, Thomas bought another tract of

land from a man named Robert Bradley.   This tract, which consisted of 800 acres, was located in Prince George's County, Maryland and was called "Darnall's Grove."   It was situated on the west side of the Patuxent River and Collington's Branch of the Patuxent River, near the present town of Upper Marlborough.

Shortly after Thomas purchased "Darnall's Grove," he and his family moved to Prince George's County, where they settled in Queen Anne's Parish. Thomas and his father-in-law, Henry Ridgely, were later elected Vestrymen of Queen Anne's Parish at an assembly held in the St. Barnabas Episcopal Church on 9 April 1705. During the following year, 1706, Thomas was made a Justice of the Prince George's County Court, and was also appointed a Commissioner for the Upper Marlborough District.   He was later succeeded as a Vestryman for Queen Anne's Parish on 29 March 1714.   Four years later, on 7 May 1718, he sold a portion of the tract called "Athel," and all of "Murray's Addition" to George Bailey for 100 pounds.

Thomas Odell died in Prince George's County in 1722.   His will, which was dated 29 April 1717, was subsequently probated before the Prince George's County Court on 11 April 1722.   In his will, Thomas named his wife, Sarah, as Executrix.   Sarah died in 1727, also in Prince George's County, Maryland.

Notes for T HOMAS O DELL, J R. :

Thomas Odell, the eldest son of Thomas Odell and Sarah (Ridgely) Brewer, was born in All Hollows Parish in Anne Arundel County, Maryland on 7 January 1692/93. He was later married in Maryland to a woman named Margaret Beall. Although no record of their marriage has been found, it most likely took place in about 1712 in Prince George's County, Maryland. Margaret, who was born in about 1694 in Maryland, was the daughter of James Bell (Beall) and Sarah Pearce. She was also the sister of the Sarah Beall who married Thomas Odell's brother, Rignall.

Thomas and Margaret probably resided in Prince George's County, Maryland until at least 1755, the year that Margaret's mother, Sarah (Pearce) Beall Haswell, wrote her will. This will, which was submitted for probate on 28 November 1761, left Margaret a small legacy of five shillings. Thomas and Margaret were not residing in Maryland at the time of her mother's death in 1761, however, as they appear to have moved to South Carolina by 1758.

Thomas, as well as his son, John, are found in the land records of South Carolina as owning plantations in the original Berkeley County.   Thomas had a plantation surveyed for him on 18 December 1758, which was situated on Ninety-Six Creek and contained 400 acres.   Although it is believed that Thomas died in South Carolina in about 1763, the actual date of Margaret's death has not been determined.   She too is believed to have died in South Carolina, however.

Notes for W ILLIAM O DELL :

William Odell, the son of Thomas Odell and Margaret Beall, is believed to have been born in about 1714 in Prince George's County, Maryland.   His wife's name was Elizabeth, and according to a number of sources, she was Elizabeth Talbot.   The fact that William and his wife named a son, Talbot Odell, obviously lends some support to this argument.

After their marriage, William and Elizabeth apparently settled near Randallstown in Baltimore County, Maryland, where they acquired several tracts of land.   William died intestate in Baltimore County, Maryland in early 1749, and these tracts appear to have been inherited by his oldest son, John, according to old English law.   Whatever became of Elizabeth has not been determined.

Notes for M ARY O DELL :

Mary Odell, the daughter of Thomas Odell and Margaret Beall, was born in about 1722 in Prince George's County, Maryland. She was later married in Maryland to a man named Hilleary Williams, the son of Baruch Williams and Eleanor Nuthall. Hilleary and Mary apparently resided in that portion of Prince George's County that was formed into Frederick County, Maryland in 1748. They later sold the plantation called "Figure of Eight," which was situated in Prince George's County, to Jeremiah Berry for 4,000 pounds of tobacco on 22 April 1752.

The below children were mentioned in the will of Mary's grandmother, Sarah (Pearce) Beall Haswell.   This will, which was dated 22 May 1755, was probated in Prince George's County on 28 November 1762.

Thanks to Sherman Jumper for the information on John's participation in the Revolutionary War Information from CAMP - KEMP FAMILY HISTORY, Mann, Col. Robert Neville and Catherine Cleek Mann, Cedar Bluff, AL (1967), Vol 1, pp. 47-49

Husband: John Odell

He was a Patriot. The name of John Odell appears on a memorial to 58 Revolutionary Soldiers and Heroines of the Lebanon Methodist Church area (is this in the Greeneville area?); this memorial was erected by the Sullivan-Dunklin Chapter, DAR; unveiled 5/18/1958. John Odell is listed on the muster roll of Sullivan Scouts.

"The Sullivan Independent Company of Volunteer Scouts - 1781 was organized when 96 District, SC   was being terrorized by Tories and Red-coats. After the fall of Charleston and loss of Lincoln's Army, there   were no Americans in arms in the state except a few, small detached bodies of patriots, mostly old men and boys... Rapacious plunderings, outrages, and murders were the order of the day. Volunteer bands sprang up   like mushrooms, many of whom were not mentioned in history, but it was these that played a large part in the salvation of the state."

"The Sullivan Scouts was organized among relatives, friends, and neighbors. It was loose organization of 100/150 men, with 4 co-captains, each of whom, in an emergency would call together the men nearest him or whom he could reach, and go at once into action, while the rest of the company was being assembled by signals or courier. Each of the captains was directly responsible for defending a certain territory. Sometime the farm bell, the cow-horn, or a woman on horseback sounded the alarm. The women were placed on alert and used their ingenuity to warn neighbors of impending trouble... The men working in fields or elsewhere,

would at once drop everything, gather their arms, mount a fleet horse and rush to the assembling place. Many of the Tories were caught and hung. The site is a ford on the Reedy River, to the rear of the present Prospect Baptist Church. There is a list of men who were hung here and some of their families are very prominent today."

Ancestral File Number:

Lived in Virginia (now West Virginia) according to William M. Prather of Rossville, Illinois. The family tradition is that he lived in Randolph County which split from Harrison County in 1784. The family was from Maryland. We believe his father was Jeramiah, son of John Smith Prather, Jr. but documentation is still lacking. James was born in Maryland in 1760. He named his first son Jeramiah. Jeramiah "Jr.", son of John Smith Prather and Elizabeth Nuthall, was born in Queen Ann's Parish, Maryland on July 21 but the year in the Parish Register is not readable. However, on May 15, 1779 he deposed to be 48 years old so he must have been born in 1830. Jeramiah registered a stray May 15, 1762 in Prince George County, Maryland (Dees, book RR, f.217) according to Sharon Delahante's book. Jeramiah's father gave him 1/2 of "Deer Park" and "Bear Garden Inlarged" in Frederick County (now Montgomery) and prior to that Jeramiah lived on "Spriggs Request" Jeramiah died in Fayette County, Kentucky in 1809.

William Prather has information from marriage licenses, Estate Settlement suit and census records. He also has been in contact with descendents who did not know dates but did know who their ancestors were and the subsequent lines seem secure. James came to Bourbon County, Kentucky in 1790 and I find him on the tax rolls in Harrison and Randolph County prior to that in 1784. There was a Jeramiah in Bourbon County before 1770. My father's cousin, Elsa Edwards, has a note from Mary Elizabeth Ross Williams, daughter of William Ross the brother of my great grandfather, stating that "Jonathon was the son of James and Elinor Prather, that James lived in Randolph County, W. Virginia and moved to Bourbon County, Kentucky in the 1790s"

In the obituary of David White, a grandson and the son of James's daughter, Nancy, it states that his grandfather Prather served in the war

of 1812. I do not find him in the National Archives index at Laguna Niguel, California. It is my opinion that since James's first son was named Jeramiah it is very likely that his father was Jeramiah also. Also, there was a Jeramiah Prather in Bourbon County before 1790---? his father, uncle or older brother.

Bill Prather states that James lived in the corner of where Bourbon, Montgomery, Bath and Nicholas Counties come together and that "he could step out his door into any of these counties" Bill has searched Randolph   (Harrison) county for a will without success.

There is a will for a Jeramiah Prather leaving everything to his wife, Ann. However, no estate record has been found for Ann, hence no certainty of their children's names.

The 1785 census of Harrison County, Virginia lists a James Prather with "two white souls".

The History of Vermilion County, copy in my file: The Prathers were initially German immigrants to Pennsylvania, later his family moved to Virginia. "In pioneer times his family moved to Kentucky when Jonathan was young and they were early settlers in Bath County. He was one of nine brothers and three sisters in Kentucky but he moved to Vermilion County, Illinois during the Black Hawk War in 1832, living near Danville and later across the state line and had a farm and worked as a cabinet maker in Vermillion County, Indiana. This information was furnished by George Prather, the mother of my great grandmother, Sarah Prather Ross, while he was still alive. It states his father, Uriah, was reared to manhood in Vermilion County, Illinois. We have the family traced to James Prather who was born in Maryland and

migrated to Harrison County, Virginia (now Randolph County, West Virginia) and in 1790 moved to Bourbon County Kentuckey. His farm was located at the point of juncture of Bath, Nicholas and Bourbon Counties and he could walk out his door into any of the counties.
