Hi Jackie,
It is good to see you.
During my search in census returns, I just so happened
to come up with a surname "Dowden" in the early 1800s.
I do not know whether the surname is another variant of
spelling for Oden or not.
I used to correspond in 1980s with a descendant of
Hezekiah Oden of Montgomery Co., Maryland in the
late 1700s. He said he consulted a historian at
Montgomery Co. Historical Society in 1980s about
the origins of the surname "Norfut". The historian
theorized that a minister misspelled "Norfut" for either
"Norfleet" or "Offutt". I theorize that Anne's surname
may have been "Offutt" because there was a very large
Offutt family living nearby in Mont. Co. for several generations.
If not, then Anne may have been a descendant of a Norfleet
family in Virginia.
I have learned that Joanna (Stowell) Oden's half-sister
Elizabeth Richardson and her husband Alfred Nathaniel
Oden, Jr. used to live on the Catochin mountains in
Frederick County. The area of Catochin and Thurmont is
where a weekend home for a president is located called
Camp David. Both Alfred and Elizabeth died in Washington
County. Was that where Benjamin J. Oden/Owden/Owdin
owned, or used to own, acres of a farm, I still do not know.
Benjamin was brother of your descendant Alfred Oden, *Sr.*
and Zacharias Oden/Owden/Owdin, I still do not know.
Best regards,
Jean
