Thank you so much, Diana. Even if you haven't found anything. Did you look
in the 1860 census? He arrived in 1852 at age 7 and was said to have lived
in Lebanon until he was 19. That is, about 1864.

He IS listed in the 1880 census, in Keosauqua Iowa (Van Buren County) with
his family. He is said to have gone there at age 19 (c. 1864). So if this is
correct he wouldn't have been in Ohio for the 1870 census. Although some of
his 5 siblings might have been. I have no idea what happened to them or
their names or ages.

I looked at all the Cornell's born in Germany in the 1880 census. Some of
them are promising as his siblings.
