I have spent several years trying to find out what happened to an ancestor
who died when my grandfather was about 17 (1878 or 1879) in Cleveland and,
according to my mother "She is buried in St. Joseph's Cemetery on Woodland
Ave." The ancestor was my great-grandmother, Rosa (Zimprich) Jirele, wife of John
Jirele, Blacksmith, of 180 Croton Street, Cleveland. Rosa was born in Horni
Libchavy, Bohemia in abt 1829 so she would have been about 48 to 50 when she
died. There is no Rosa Jirele or any name like it in the Cleveland Public
Library Necrology File nor in the "Cuyahoga County Deaths 1867-1890" list. I
went page by page in the latter list looking for a "Rosa" who died between 1867
and 1879 and found a Rosa Irgle 43 years old who died 5/31/1879. A long shot,
but I sent a request to the Cuyahoga County Archives for a copy of the death
record as well as searching Ancestor.com's records and writing to the
Catholic Cemeteries Association in Cleveland to see if they had any records for a
"Rosa Irgle" who died 5/31/1879.
The Cuyahoga County Archives death record for Rosa Irgle listed her as
from Bohemia, age 43, with parents Joseph and Anna Zimbrick (Rosa Jirele's
parents were Joseph and Anna Zimprich.) Her death was due to pneumonia.
Ancestry.com had the 1879 Mortality records from the 1880 Census for Cleveland
which listed an R. Irgle, age 48, from Bohemia, residence 180 Croton Street,
Cleveland. Her death was due to pneumonia. Finally, the Catholic Cemeteries
Association responded that they didn't have any Rosa Jirele or Rosa Irgle in
their records, but did have a Rachel Irgle who died 5/31/1879 and was buried in
the St. John's Cemetery. They did not have any record of just where in the
cemetery she was buried!
From the way both the way both the Cuyahoga County Death records and the
1879 Mortality schedule were recorded alphabetically, they were probably
copied from a chronological master record. I have written to the Archives to see
if they know if a master record still exists.
If anyone has a suggestion as to a resource I have missed or knows how
to find a particular grave in St. John's (or maybe St. Joseph's) Cemetery, I
would really appreciate an E-mail.
