Carolyn~
I have found census records, hit or miss. For whatever reason, many
people of my family are just not there. Spent many a Sunday afternoon at the
library. Also, since I had some info, I found inaccurate info in various
census. I think at times the brogue was hard to understand. Also, as many
of us who have had to deal with insurance policies of our ancestors, dates
and ages were not always accurate. I thought it was just my Gran and her
family, however, I have since found out it was an Irish "thing" and not
limited to my family!
Trips downtown for death, birth, and marriage records pre 1900 are also
hit or miss.
I found that marriage records at St. Patrick's Bridge, pre 1900 had a
great deal of info (i.e., bride and grooms parent's names and many times
village/townland instead of the usual Ireland).
Naturalization pre 1900, especially for women marrying American born
men, many times just didn't happen. Also, many times the men didn't bother
either!
Burial records for place is another problem. I can't find any record
for my g grandfather anyplace; naturalization, seaman's papers, death.
However, his name is on the family stone at Calvary but the records state he
is not buried there!
At least our descendants, will have something but they will have missed
out on the fun of the hunt! Rather like a great mystery story, "tracers of
lost ancestors!"
