Caroline~
There was indeed an orphanage in those times run by the Sisters of
Charity. It was either at the present day site of St. Vincent Charity
Hospital or in the vicinity of it. As you walk into the lobby today there is
a picture or reference to it per my sister. She has worked for the
organization since university. I had just this past week received data on
our g great grandmother from another lister. Sharing it with my sister and
also your message, her first comment was "Oh my God! When I am at the
hospital I pass, etc., etc." In the 1880 census our g grandmother had placed
two, 5 yr. old sons in their care since she was a young widow in 1875. She
then became a servant in the home of a Conrad Beck.
Rette, (my sister) said she would look into possibility of records
being somewhere for research. Will save your note and if she finds out
anything I'll get back to you.
