Carolyn~
I found this information in the Encyclopedia of Cleveland History which
is online.
Under the topic the Sisters of Charity of St. Augustine:
The nuns cared for the sick in their homes until St. Joseph Hospital
opened in Ohio City in 1852. They also cared for the orphaned children of
their patients. By 1856 St. Vincent Orphanage superseded the hospital.

This could mean that the parents had died and that was why he was there but
not necessarily. My g grandmother had placed 2 sons there when she was
widowed. I know that she reclaimed Wm. and my Gran (from VA convent) when
she was able. I am assuming that her 2 other children my have died. However,
I have to look this up.

I will get back to you when my sister checks out if old records are
available.
